Running on nothing - By Daniel Precious Chinaza

I could see the tears through her smile. The wider her grin, the wetter her cheeks.  She drove me on a chair with tyres to the refugee camp where the others were.  The atmosphere was moody. The streets were quiet. Blood stained walls,  body parts separated from bodies,  the sight of intestines bulging out from lifeless bodies would nauseate anyone. The scene of bullets and grenade bringing people down played in my head for the fifteenth time after the blood bath.  We got to the camp, the sight made Victoria cry.  She wrote again in her little white book. Children cried, their cry lacked tears, their sobs were weak and faint.  The others nibbled on cracked and dry nipples. The men with heads hanging loosely on their necks.  Their eyes were open but blinded with agony.  Victoria spoke to someone with the little black box. In minutes five large birds were hovering over us and in another minute we were all inside them moving up into the sky.  I looked down and remembered how I ran even without legs, for safety.
